EU AI Act
Full obligations for high-risk AI systems apply from August 2026. Organisations must demonstrate risk management, human oversight, accountability chains, and documentation or face fines of up to €35M or 7% of global turnover.
FCA AI Guidance
The FCA requires firms to be able to explain and account for AI-influenced decisions in financial services. The UK AI Safety Institute is expanding its remit to cover operational AI governance.
OCC / CFPB Guidance
Sector-specific guidance from the OCC and CFPB establishes accountability expectations for AI in credit, lending, and financial operations. Federal AI legislation is advancing through Congress.
ISO 42001 (AI Management)
ISO 42001 is the international standard for AI management systems. Increasingly referenced in procurement requirements and regulatory frameworks as the baseline for demonstrable AI governance.
The EU AI Act applies to any organisation that operates in or sells to the EU regardless of where it is incorporated.
This is not a European compliance problem. It is a global operational problem. Any organisation with EU customers, EU employees, or EU operations is subject to the Act's requirements. The August 2026 deadline is not a distant horizon it is now.
Ungoverned AI is not just a compliance risk. It is an operational drain.
When AI tools are adopted without structure, organisations do not gain efficiency they gain complexity. Teams use different tools for the same task. Outputs are inconsistent and unverifiable. Processes built around AI tools are fragile because no one documented how they work or who is responsible when they fail.
The result is a paradox: organisations invest in AI to become more efficient, and end up spending more time managing the chaos that unstructured AI adoption creates. Duplicated tools. Conflicting outputs. Unaccountable decisions. Processes that cannot be audited, improved, or scaled.

Why I believe the change has to happen now.
Across years of leading operations and transformation programmes in financial services, professional services, and regulated industries, I watched the same thing happen in every organisation I worked with. AI tools were being adopted at pace by teams, by departments, by individuals and the operational infrastructure to govern them was simply not being built. Not because people did not care. Because no one had made it a structural priority.
The pattern was consistent: a tool gets deployed, it works, more tools follow, and within months the organisation has AI embedded in workflows no one has fully documented, decisions influenced by systems no one has formally approved, and accountability gaps that only surface when something goes wrong. I saw this in credit operations, in client onboarding, in compliance functions that had adopted AI-assisted screening without ever documenting who was accountable for the output.
What changed is that regulators caught up. The EU AI Act is in force. The FCA is asking firms to explain AI-influenced decisions. Boards are being asked to sign off on AI risk they cannot currently quantify. The window for treating governance as optional has closed.
